NOWPayments vs Wallet Checkout: Broad Catalog vs Direct Settlement

If you are searching NOWPayments vs wallet checkout, or a NOWPayments alternative, you are usually deciding one thing:

Do you want a managed gateway that can accept a huge coin list, convert, and (by default) hold a balance — or do you want hosted checkout that pays a wallet you already control?

Those are different products. Treating them as the same “crypto payment gateway” is how merchants pick the wrong one.

Quick answer: stay on NOWPayments if you need 300+/350+ coins, a public Shopify or Woo plugin, auto-conversion, mass payouts, or a custody balance you can withdraw from. Look at FinCobra Checkout only if you want hosted invoices that pay your wallet — BTC via xpub, USDT/USDC on documented chains — at Free Start $1,000 then 0.5% PAYG, with no NOWPayments-style merchant balance.

This page is a fit filter, not a “#1 NOWPayments alternative” listicle. We will not out-coin them.

The split that actually matters

NOWPayments is a managed multi-coin gateway. On 2026-08-26 their own blog says it plainly: they are a custodial crypto payment gateway, and new accounts start with custodial processing on. Customer pays → funds credit a NOWPayments balance (unless you attach a payout wallet and turn custody off). That stack is what buys conversion, batched withdrawals, mass payouts, and fiat offramp.

FinCobra Checkout is hosted self-custodial checkout. You get invoices, a hosted /pay/:id page, API keys, and HMAC webhooks. Funds go to merchant-configured wallets. There is no FinCobra-held merchant balance to withdraw from.

If your success metric is “customer can pay in anything, I settle in one coin or fiat,” NOWPayments is built for that. If your success metric is “no processor holds the money, on rails I can name,” FinCobra is the narrower tool.

“NOWPayments vs wallet checkout” is not a fee-table fight. It is a custody-and-catalog fight.

Choose NOWPayments if

Choose NOWPayments if most of these are true:

  • You need a broad coin catalog so customers can pay in whatever they hold — BTC, ETH, XMR, TRX, DOGE, USDT-TRC20, memecoins, plus the long tail on their supported-coins page. FinCobra will not grow into that list to win this comparison.
  • You need Shopify, or a public Woo / Presta / Magento / WHMCS plugin you can install this week. Their Woo page is a real public product (v2.0.0, Woo up to 10.7). FinCobra has no Shopify and Woo is a private pilot.
  • You need conversion: customer pays coin A, you receive coin B or a custody-balance stablecoin, or you want a fiat offramp. Their help center prices that path at 1% (multi-currency / fixed-rate). That is still the right product if conversion is the job.
  • You want a custody balance: batch small payments, off-chain convert, mass-payout affiliates, start accepting before you attach an external wallet. That is exactly what they turned on by default in May/June 2026.
  • You do not want to run an xpub, name chains, or explain on-chain settlement to accounting.

Shopify is a NOWPayments win against us, not a FinCobra talking point. If Shopify is the job, look at providers that actually ship a Shopify app — including them — and ignore any page that pretends FinCobra has one.

On fees: do not shop the homepage “1% starting / 0.3% custom” in isolation. The Fees help article (30 May 2026) is the operational contract: 0.5% when pay-coin equals receive-coin at a floating rate; 1% when you convert, lock a 10-minute fixed rate, or push fees to the payer. Then add the two platform-side network fees they document on every default payment. A $20 USDT-ERC20 invoice can lose more to those hops than to the 0.5% line.

Choose FinCobra if

Choose FinCobra Checkout if most of these are true:

  • You want direct wallet settlement. BTC to unique addresses from your xpub/ypub/zpub. USDT/USDC to wallets you configure. No processor balance to request a withdrawal from. No “turn custody off in Payment settings” step, because there is no custody product.
  • You will live on the documented rails only: Bitcoin; USDT and USDC on Ethereum; USDC on Arbitrum One and Base; USDT and USDC on Solana. Not native ETH. Not Arbitrum USDT. Not Lightning. Not TRC20. Not “any token.”
  • 0.5% PAYG after the first $1,000 of paid invoice volume is the fee model you want, billed monthly in arrears — and you are comparing it to NOWPayments’ 0.5% mono line, not pretending it beats their 1% conversion path if you still need conversion.
  • You are a technical merchant: create invoice → hosted payment page → HMAC webhook → fulfill. You do not need their treasury, mass-payout address book, or 350-coin widget.
  • You accept that WooCommerce is a private pilot (v0.1.0, USD one-time, $99/yr at 0% or 0.5%). It is not on WordPress.org. woo-demo.fincobra.com is a demo, not a public install.

FinCobra still hosts checkout, monitoring, and billing. “Self-custodial” here means no merchant spend keys and no FinCobra-held balance — not “we disappeared from the stack.” If you want zero hosted coordinator and zero processing fee, that is BTCPay Server, not us.

What “NOWPayments alternative” pages usually skip

Most results for nowpayments alternative and nowpayments vs wallet checkout in today’s SERP are other managed gateways arguing about coin count and a 0.5% headline (Aurpay, Paymento, CoinGate-adjacent listicles). That is a useful comparison if you still want a processor, a plugin, and a conversion engine.

It is the wrong comparison if you searched “wallet checkout” because you do not want NOWPayments to hold the money — including for the few minutes their own Fees article says the deposit sits on their address.

Four other skips:

  1. “NOWPayments is non-custodial.” Reviews and older help copy still say it. Their June 2026 blog does not: they call themselves a custodial gateway, default on for new accounts. Non-custodial is now an opt-out after you attach a payout wallet.
  2. Fee tables that stop at 0.5%. Zendesk lists the 1% conversion / fixed-rate trigger and the three-hop network-fee path. Model those if you settle ERC-20 or convert.
  3. Coin-count as quality. 350+ is a real NOWPayments product. It is not a FinCobra goal. A merchant who needs TRC20 USDT or XMR should stay there.
  4. Shopify as a FinCobra checkbox. They sell it. We do not. If the store is Shopify, stop reading.

For the custody vocabulary, read what non-custodial checkout means. For the self-host fork, read BTCPay Server alternative. For the fiat-gateway fork, read CoinGate alternative.

Fees, honestly

NOWPayments (Fees help center, updated 2026-05-30): 0.5% when the customer pays in the same asset you receive, at the classic (floating) rate. 1% when they pay in a different asset, when you enable a 10-minute fixed rate, or when is_fee_paid_by_user is true. Network fees are extra: payer hop + internal hop + payout hop. They document ways to push cost to the customer (fee-paid-by-user, markup up to 10%) or to cheaper coins (they name BNBBSC, LTC, TRX). Homepage/pricing still advertise “1% starting” and custody “as low as 0.3%” — treat those as marketing until a contract says otherwise.

FinCobra Checkout (product truth): first $1,000 paid invoice volume free, then 0.5% of paid volume, monthly arrears. You pay chain network fees on the settlement you configured. There is no conversion line because there is no conversion product. There is no SEPA line because there is no bank settlement.

A $10,000 mono-currency month: NOWPayments service fee is about $50 before the two platform-side network hops; FinCobra PAYG after Free Start is $50 on volume above the $1,000 allowance (first month) or $50 on the full $10,000 later — in crypto to your wallet. A $10,000 converted month on NOWPayments is about $100 service fee plus hops. Do not call 0.5% “the same as NOWPayments 0.5%” if your real job is “pay in anything, settle in USDT-TRC20.” That job is theirs, at 1%.

If you then sell FinCobra-settled crypto on an exchange, add that spread yourself.

WooCommerce and Shopify, without the stretch

NOWPayments’ Woo plugin is a public install path: account, wallet, API key, upload or WordPress plugin directory, Payment Gateways tab. Their page claims 100+ coins and autoconversion. That is the right default for a store that wants NOWPayments.

FinCobra’s Woo plugin is a private pilot. USD catalog, one-time products, no Subscriptions, no advertised refunds, no public WordPress.org listing. If you need a production Woo plugin this week, NOWPayments (or another public plugin) wins. If you want to see the pilot checkout, use the Woo demo — demo only.

Shopify: they advertise it; we do not ship it. Neither “wallet checkout” nor a lower fee makes FinCobra a Shopify NOWPayments alternative.

How to decide in one pass

  1. Must customers pay in a long-tail coin (XMR, TRC20, DOGE, “whatever they hold”)? → NOWPayments. Stop.
  2. Must you install Shopify or a public cart plugin this week? → NOWPayments. Stop.
  3. Must you convert or off-ramp to fiat inside the processor? → NOWPayments. Stop.
  4. Must funds hit your xpub / USDT / USDC wallet, with no processor balance, on the documented chains only, via API invoices? → FinCobra is in the set.
  5. Want self-host, 0% software fee, Lightning, maximum Bitcoin control? → BTCPay Server, not either of us as a clone.

If you are in bucket 4 — wallet settlement, narrow rails, hosted invoices — book a live walkthrough and configure your own wallets in the app (BTC xpub; USDT/USDC on the chains above). If you specifically want a storefront preview of the Woo pilot, use the Woo demo.

Do not ask us to be NOWPayments with fewer coins. That is not the product.
