# BTCPay Server Alternative: Hosted Wallet Settlement vs Self-Host

If you are searching for a **BTCPay Server alternative**, you already know the shape of BTCPay Server: open-source, self-hosted, 0% processing, funds to your wallet.

The remaining question is not “is BTCPay good?” It is.

Do you want to **run a Bitcoin payment server**, or do you want **hosted invoices that still settle to wallets you control**?

Those are different jobs.

**Quick answer:** BTCPay Server wins if you want self-host sovereignty, Lightning, a public plugin ecosystem, and **0% processing** (you pay VPS/hosting and your time). FinCobra Checkout is the hosted path: create an invoice, send the buyer to `/pay/:id`, verify an HMAC webhook, and take BTC plus documented USDT/USDC into **your** wallets — without operating a node. It is not free, not Lightning, and not more sovereign than BTCPay.

This is a fit filter, not a “#1 BTCPay alternative” listicle. Most pages ranking for `btcpay alternative` today are other Docker stacks arguing about Tron and USDC. That is not this comparison.

## The split that actually matters

BTCPay is **software you (or a third-party host) run**. There is no company in the middle of the payment. You attach a wallet, the instance writes invoices, watches the chain, and tells your store when to fulfill. Official docs: code, not a company; no processing or subscription fee; miner fees still apply.

FinCobra Checkout is a **hosted coordinator**. Same settlement idea — no FinCobra-held merchant balance, no spend keys — but we run checkout, monitoring, and billing. You configure wallets, create invoices via API, redirect to a hosted payment page, and fulfill from signed webhooks.

If “my node validates my payments” is the requirement, FinCobra is the wrong tool. If “I will not SSH into a payments box this year” is the requirement, BTCPay (self-hosted) is the wrong tool. A [third-party BTCPay host](https://docs.btcpayserver.org/Deployment/ThirdPartyHosting/) sits in between: still BTCPay software, still their machine, with the trust caveats their own docs list.

## BTCPay Server vs FinCobra at a glance

| | BTCPay Server (official, 2026-08-26) | FinCobra Checkout |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Model | Self-hosted (or community third-party host). You are the processor. | Hosted checkout. Settlement to your wallets. |
| Custody | Non-custodial. xpub receive; keys stay with you. A third-party host can still be a trust hole — they say so. | No merchant spend keys; no FinCobra-held balance. We still host the software layer. Not more sovereign than self-host BTCPay. |
| Headline cost | **0% processing.** Hosting: official range VPS under $10/mo up to $10–70; LunaNode 1-click table ~$10; typical LunaNode BTC box ≈ $14 + $1.80 volume. Third-party hosts free or paid. | **Free Start $1,000** paid invoice volume, then **0.5% PAYG**, monthly arrears. |
| Rails | Bitcoin + **Lightning** (LND / CLN / Eclair). Opt-in altcoins / community build. | BTC (xpub/ypub/zpub). USDT+USDC on Ethereum and Solana. **USDC only** on Arbitrum One and Base. No Lightning. No native ETH. No Arbitrum USDT. |
| Ops | Deploy, sync a node, update, back up, debug. LN adds channels and liquidity. Community support. | Configure wallets + API key. We run uptime and chain watchers. |
| Integrations | Public WooCommerce V2 (WordPress.org). Shopify, Magento, PrestaShop, OpenCart, WHMCS, POS, crowdfunding, BitPay-compatible + Greenfield APIs. | Hosted page, Checkout API, TypeScript SDK, donation pages, PWA. WooCommerce **private pilot** only — not WordPress.org. No Shopify. |
| Best fit | Operators who want the stack. | Technical merchants who want invoices + webhooks without the stack. |

## Choose BTCPay Server if

Choose BTCPay if most of these are true:

- You want **your node, your coins, 0% software fee**. Official cost is hosting plus miner fees — not a processor percentage.
- You want **Lightning**. FinCobra has **no Lightning**. If LN is the job, stop here.
- You want open-source you can audit and fork, multi-tenant hosting, POS, crowdfunding, Payjoin, Tor, hardware-wallet vault flows.
- You want a **public WooCommerce plugin** from WordPress admin / WP.org this week, or another cart they already document.
- You are willing to own deploy + sync + updates + backups.
- You would rather pay ~$10–20/month and your time forever than 0.5% of volume.

If that is you, use BTCPay.

## Choose FinCobra if

Choose FinCobra Checkout if most of these are true:

- You want **hosted wallet settlement**, not a processor balance and not a server to babysit. Invoice → `/pay/:id` → HMAC webhook → fulfill.
- You will live on the **documented rails only**: Bitcoin via xpub/ypub/zpub; USDT and USDC on Ethereum; USDC on Arbitrum One and Base; USDT and USDC on Solana. Not any token. Not native ETH. Not Lightning.
- **0.5% PAYG** after the first $1,000 of paid invoice volume is acceptable. Billed monthly in arrears.
- You are a technical merchant. API keys and webhook signatures are normal.
- You accept that **WooCommerce is a private pilot** (v0.1.0, USD one-time, $99/yr at 0% or 0.5%). Not on WordPress.org. [woo-demo.fincobra.com](https://woo-demo.fincobra.com/) is a demo, not a public install.

FinCobra still hosts checkout, monitoring, and billing. If you want zero hosted coordinator and zero processing fee, that is BTCPay, not us.

## Custody, without the slogan fight

Both products can settle to a wallet you control.

**BTCPay:** the instance derives invoice addresses from your xpub. If you use a third-party host, BTCPay’s own docs say the host is a trust surface.

**FinCobra:** you configure receiving wallets. We do not take spend keys and we do not hold a merchant balance. We do operate the hosted layer; EVM hub commission cap 50 bps. Prefer **direct wallet settlement** over “as sovereign as running BTCPay.”

If the word you care about is sovereignty, BTCPay self-host wins. If the word is no processor balance, both can qualify; pick on ops and rails.

## Fees, honestly

**BTCPay (official, 2026-08-26):** 0% merchant processing. You still pay Bitcoin network fees and hosting.

Their vs-others page: VPS can be less than $10/mo. Deployment table: LunaNode 1-click ~$10, Clovyr ~$20, Comet Cash ~$30, other VPS $10–70. LunaNode’s own guide: Bitcoin-capable m.4 at $14/mo + $1.80 for 60 GB volume — about $16/mo for a boring BTC box.

**FinCobra Checkout:** first $1,000 of paid invoice volume free, then 0.5% of paid volume, monthly arrears. Unpaid invoices do not count.

A $10,000 confirmed month after Free Start: FinCobra PAYG is $50. BTCPay software is $0 plus the box. BTCPay is cheaper in cash if you will actually run it. You are buying “no node, no sync.”

## Coins and chains

BTCPay is Bitcoin- and Lightning-first. Altcoins are opt-in. Do not dunk with a fake “BTCPay doesn’t do USDC” line.

FinCobra is narrow on purpose: BTC xpub; USDT+USDC on Ethereum; USDC on Arbitrum One and Base; USDT+USDC on Solana.

If you need Tron USDT, a 300-coin catalog, native ETH, or Lightning invoices, we are not the alternative.

## Lightning (they have it; we do not)

BTCPay Server has native Lightning. FinCobra Checkout does **not** accept Lightning. If buyers pay in sats over Lightning, choose BTCPay.

## Ops burden

BTCPay: deploy, sync (days unless FastSync), connect wallet, keep updated. A third-party host is still run-BTCPay, not use-FinCobra.

FinCobra: configure wallets, API key, webhook secret, POST invoices, fulfill on confirmed. You take a dependency on our uptime and billing.

## Integrations, without the stretch

BTCPay WooCommerce V2 is public on WordPress.org. They also list Shopify and a long CMS tail — theirs. FinCobra does not ship Shopify.

FinCobra Woo is a private pilot. If you need a production Woo Bitcoin plugin this week and will host BTCPay, BTCPay wins. Woo demo is demo only.

## What BTCPay alternative pages usually skip

Today’s SERP is other self-hosted stacks or BTCPay vs BitPay/CoinGate. The third model: hosted invoices, wallet settlement, narrow BTC + USDT/USDC, small PAYG so someone else runs the watcher.

## How to decide in one pass

1. Own node + 0% processing? BTCPay. Stop.
2. Lightning? BTCPay. Stop.
3. Public Woo/Shopify/Magento this week? BTCPay for their carts. We have no Shopify.
4. Funds to your xpub/USDT/USDC wallets, no processor balance, no payment server? FinCobra is in the set.
5. EUR/USD to a bank? Neither. CoinGate/BitPay.

If you are in bucket 4, book a **[live walkthrough](https://fincobra.com/)** and configure **[your own wallets](https://fincobra.com/checkout)**. Docs: [https://fincobra.com/docs/checkout/](https://fincobra.com/docs/checkout/). If you want a storefront preview of the Woo pilot, use the [Woo demo](https://woo-demo.fincobra.com/).

Do not ask us to be BTCPay with a prettier UI and 0% fees.
